DESCRIPTION:LIVE @651ARTS Presents Black Dance Stories\nCurated by Charmaine Warren\nFeaturing Tiffany Rea-Fisher and Jamar Roberts.\n  \nConceived and co-created by Charmaine Warren\, the Black Dance Stories series launched in June 2020 in response to Black dance artists’ need to talk about life during COVID-19 and support the Black Lives Matter movement. The series is consistent with Black artists’ tradition of finding a way to amplify their voices during turbulent times. When civil\, moral\, and social freedoms are challenged and stifled\, Black artists find ways to use their talents as activism. \nBlack Dance Stories showcases and initiates discussions with Black creatives. Alive and ever-vibrant from the everyday and iconic\, the conversations explore social\, historical\, and personal issues and highlight the African Diaspora’s humanity in the mysterious and celebrated dance world. \nSince its launch\, Black Dance Stories has produced more than 45 episodes featuring over 80 of the most decorated Black dancers\, choreographers\, movement artists\, and others who use their work to raise societal issues and strengthen their community. Founder and co-creator Charmaine Warren reminds weekly viewers: Black dance artists have not been quiet since. Black dance artists have been doing the work. Black dance artists continue to make work. To stay involved\, we will hold weekly impromptu discussions and tell stories—Black Dance Stories. This is one action—we will stay involved. \n651 ARTS will present the first in-person gathering for Black Dance Stories as part of its new LIVE @651ARTS series. LIVE @651ARTS is a performance series premiering virtual\, digital or print presentations LIVE for the first time. Inspired from 651 ARTS legacy programming like\, Salon 651 and Live & Outspoken\, LIVE @651ARTS invites audiences to join us as we cross-over from virtual to live gathering\, from process to presentation\, from idea to reality. \nBlack Dance Stories will feature Rena Butler\, Reggie Wilson\, Tiffany Rea-Fisher\, and Jamar Roberts. The artists will present solo work\, engage in movement together\, and take part in a lively discussion. The combination of discussion and dance will speak to these movement-based artists’ experimental and investigatory practices.

DESCRIPTION:A new ballet from Jeremy McQueen’s Black Iris Project\, presented by Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and 651 ARTS.\n  \nThe Black Iris Project\, in collaboration with the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and 651 ARTS\, proudly presents the world premiere of “WILD”\, the stage adaptation of the New York Emmy®-nominated dance film series by choreographer Jeremy McQueen. \nLoosely inspired by Maurice Sendak’s classic children’s book\, Where the Wild Things Are\, “WILD” follows a young boy’s journey celebrating his 14th birthday while detained at a juvenile detention facility and explores the effects of isolation and imprisonment on childhood development. Frequently harnessing the power of his imagination\, Stefon transports himself to an alternate universe where he is not treated like a wild animal. This cutting-edge ballet utilizes physical movement to illustrate and honor the history of Black bodies moving through space while encountering oppression and transforms countless men’s stories into an artistic dance work\, intended to be a reclaiming of time\, unity\, space\, and Black culture. \nThe ballet will be performed live and in person\, while also live-streamed on the Schomburg Center’s livestream page. This program is part of Carnegie Hall’s Afrofuturism festival. \n“WILD” is not suitable for young audiences.

DESCRIPTION:As part of this year’s NYC Pride\, the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership collaborates with 651 ARTS to present dynamic entertainer and performance artist Andre J. with their first major presentation\, Excuse Me\, Hello\, a site-specific theatrical installation that celebrates the reinvention of the human spirit through fashion\, fun and music. \nThe family-friendly portion of the piece has its debut at The Plaza at 300 Ashland as part of a free\, outdoor celebration before being presented during BAM’s Everybooty\, one of Brooklyn’s most iconic Pride Week parties. Highlighting themes of acceptance\, transformation\, and curated specifically with POC/Queer families in mind\, the Plaza presentation will include interactive art projects led by featured visual artist Leo Jiminez and his son\, yoga classes given by Alicia M. Morris\, a curated conversation with the creators and presenters of Excuse Me\, Hello and music by Antonio Brown aka DJ TonyMonkey.

DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Madison McFerrin will present a one-time-only intimate audio/visual performance titled\, Finding Foundations: A Journey Through Legacy & Self Told Through Song. Held at the Shapeshifter Lab\, this will be a live recording of music compositions created during the session. Come witness and participate as Madison builds these musical masterpieces. Using push pedals\, Madison will share her process and product in collaboration with a dancer. As audience-witnesses you will experience her experimentation with new compositions and celebration of earlier works. \nThere is limited seating so get your ticket soon! \nAbout the Artist: Madison McFerrin\nMadison McFerrin is a singer-songwriter based in Brooklyn\, NY. In December 2016\, her solo debut EP\, Finding Foundations: Vol. I\, introduced her soulful take on a cappella to the world. Critics and crowds quickly took note. Leading up to her sold out show at Joe’s Pub\, the New York Times remarked how her sound “shows wonderful vocal dexterity\, deftly swerving from sharp\, clearly enunciated staccato bursts to fluttery\, free-form melismata.” After one listen\, tastemaking DJ\, Gilles Peterson\, snatched up her standout track\, “No Time to Lose\,” for his Brownswood Bubblers compilation. She followed that up with last February’s release of Finding Foundations: Vol. II\, which gave her listeners more of what they love and earned her more critical praise. Most noteworthy is a Pitchfork Rising Artist profile that highlighted how her style offers an “understated\, compelling testament to the power and dexterity of the human voice.” On the heels of her debut European tour that featured sold out shows in London and Barcelona\, Madison eagerly anticipates sharing new music in 2019. \nMadison bears the torch of three generations of vocal pioneers. As the LA Weekly noted\, she employs her jazz virtuoso father\, Bobby McFerrin’s vocal techniques “to more soulful ends.” Her use of electronic music stylings reflects the influence of her brother\, Brainfeeder producer\, Taylor McFerrin. However\, her collage of artistic inspiration that includes the Beatles\, Radiohead\, Hiatus Kaiyote\, Stevie Wonder and Jill Scott emerge in her multilayered lyrics that rest in a bed of harmonies uniquely her own. She honed her performance chops on world tours with her father’s band\, SpiritYouAll\, that includes dynamic\, multi-instrumentalist Louis Cato. Prior to launching her solo career\, Madison co-founded the funk band\, Cosmodrome\, while completing her studies at Berklee College of Music. \nMadison delves into the core of these influences on Finding Foundations Vol. II (FF: Vol. II). The EP features a live recording of “Can You See\,” a track that was 1 of 4 selected finalists among thousands of entries in the NPR Tiny Desk Contest in spring of 2017. Drawing inspiration from Erykah Badu to Nina Simone\, Madison offers a soulful meditation on the painful legacy of police brutality in the United States. DESCRIPTION:AntonioBrownDance’s BOXED explores the space in adolescence where we go from being a child to youth to adult by using childhood games as adulthood navigations of life. Can being good at hopscotch get one ahead in life? That space in-between adolescence and playing outdoors\, to the smallness of a young adult world and learning the navigation of “playing games” to get ahead in the world\, swirls inside the narrative of BOXED. \nHow can a game of double Dutch jump rope determine your future? Is the sandbox the first and best way to make friends or destroy them? Why does adulthood require ‘playing games’ to get ahead in business or finding a life partner? Search the internet to find there are more videos on circumventing how to do something correctly rather than learning how to do it. When or was it always that society taught us as children to stop using playground games as comradery and begin to use games as competition? BOXED challenges its audience to see through the harshness of adult game-playing to the world where it will heal your soul. \nAbout the Artist: AntonioBrownDance\nAntonioBrownDance is a project-based company in New York City\,​ composed of an incredibly talented group of performing artists from various cultural and training backgrounds\, intimacy and a provocative vocabulary in movement ranging from traditional ballet to contemporary modern and hip hop.\n​​​\nFounded in 2013 by Artistic Director Antonio Brown the company seeks to explore common human behavior with elements of social and political topics. While putting on shows for his family in the living room\, his dance and choreographic talents started to take shape. At a young age he began his dance training at the Cleveland School of the Arts and was honored to move to New York City where he received his BFA from The Juilliard School under the direction of Lawrence Rhodes. While there\, he had the opportunity to perform works by José Limón\, Ohad Naharin\, Jiri Kylian\, Eliot Feld\, Aszure Barton\, Jessica Lang\, Susan Marshall\, Larry Keigwin\, among others. Antonio was a member of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company for over a decade and has traveled around the world teaching\, performing and getting a closer view of the world\, its many cultures and artistic expressions. Mr. Brown has also had the privilege to work with many companies and artists throughout the United States including Camille A. Brown & Dancers\, Gregory Dolbashian’s “The Dash Ensemble”\, Malcolm Low/Formal Structure\, Stephen Pier\, Nilas Martins Dance Company\, Damage Dance\, Sidra Bell Dance New York and The August Wilson Center Dance Ensemble. Brown has choreographed various works for Verb Ballets\, The Juilliard Dance Ensemble\, Perry Mansfield Performing Arts School and Camp\, Jacksonville University\, Cleveland State University\, Hunter College Department of Theater\, Cleveland School of the Arts\, Stivers School for the Arts\, The Grier School\, Lehigh Valley Dance Exchange “LVDE”\, Theatre Askew and most recently The Arden Theater Company’s production of “The Bluest Eye”.\n​\nMr. Brown’s work has also been showcased during the International Association of Blacks in Dance (IABD)\, Dumbo Dance Festival\, Wave Rising Series\, Central Park’s Summer Stage\, Dixon Place\, A Modern Tribute\, Center for Performance Research and internationally in Tanzania\, Africa and The Isle of Wight\, UK. Antonio Brown was the first featured alumni artist for the Friends of Cleveland School of the Arts fundraising GALA in 2010\, a featured commissioned choreographer for the Perry Mansfield Performing Arts School and Camp Centennial Celebration in 2013\, and was commissioned to choreograph a Lamentation Variation on Verb Ballets in conjunction with the Martha Graham Dance Company in 2015.\n​\nAntonio has taught at various schools and intensives across the country. Such as the Perry Mansfield Performing Arts School and Camp since 2008\, a founding teacher for Reed Dance Intensive in Pittsburgh\, PA\, a permanent guest teacher at Cleveland School of the Arts and many others. Currently you can find Mr. Brown teaching at Mark Morris Dance Center\, The Juilliard School\, The Joffrey School and guest teaching for Gallim Dance. SUMMARY:Embracing Joy / Roots Party
DESCRIPTION:651 ARTS presents two dynamic works-in-progress and opportunities to engage with artists directly in one event. Join us on November 10th for Embracing Black Joy / Roots Party\, in partnership with Weeksville Heritage Center during their November Weeksville Weekend. \nFirst\, multi-disciplinary artist Edisa Weeks continues her journey to create one thousand eight hundred and sixty-five roots with paper and twine in recognition of the year 1865\, when legalized chattel slavery ended in America. THREE RITES: Liberty by DELIRIOUS Dances/Edisa Weeks is the second part of an evening-length interdisciplinary work featuring three interactive performance rituals (rites) about life\, liberty and happiness that examines how these rights are protected and promoted in America\, and how they manifest in the body. THREE RITES: Liberty is a performance installation in which the roots dangle from the ceiling to the floor to create an environment that the audience separates and moves through (as if moving through history)\, to find open spaces containing reflections on liberty. The full work will premiere in 2020. Watch a short video about a Roots Party here. \nNext\, witness a work-in-progress sample screening of documentary filmmaker Marta Effinger-Crichlow’s LITTLE SALLIE WALKER followed by a community discussion on the themes and topics of the film project with Producer/Director/Writer Marta Effinger-Crichlow and Community Engagement Initiative Producer/Writer Ann Bennett. LITTLE SALLIE WALKER tells the story of four black women across the generations who find pleasure\, refuge and power in childhood play. Surviving life in America as black girls\, involved imagining and creating worlds-of-make-believe through a range of play like patty cake\, dress up\, double dutch\, tag\, doll-making\, hop-scotch and hide-and-go-seek. The film unfolds in Alabama\, New York\, California\, and Washington State\, as black women and girls offer a unique and spirited glimpse into their worlds—both past and present. \nThe title of the film is inspired by the classic follow-the-leader game “Little Sallie Walker\,” which shows the wonder and creativity of children. Yet\, in the documentary\, the central and supporting characters also highlight how play reignites memories and struggles with racial oppression\, gender inequalities\, sexual assault\, and poverty. LITTLE SALLIE WALKER is a story about reclamation as these black women try to recover this magical ritual called play in a less than idyllic American society. \nJoin us in sharing your/our stories. \nThe Embracing Black Joy / Roots Party is co-presented by 651 ARTS and Weeksville Heritage Center\, with funding support provided by Con Edison\, Mertz Gilmore Foundation\, and the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. SUMMARY:A MOTHER'S RITE
DESCRIPTION:Choreographer Jeremy McQueen’s ballet collective\, The Black Iris Project\, has been using movement to celebrate black artists since 2016. At SummerStage\, the performance will include MADIBA\, a ballet inspired by the life of the late Nelson Mandela\, whose 100th birthday is being commemorated this year. The work\, which was selected by the celebrated ballerina\, Misty Copeland\, and previously performed at the The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 2017\, will be followed by the world premiere of A MOTHER’S RITE featuring Alvin Ailey dancer Courtney Spears. His work aims to create spaces of comfort\, solace\, and connection through reflection—a sharing of observations of what is going on around him. \nBorn and raised in San Diego\, California\, McQueen is a graduate of The Ailey School/Fordham University\, B.F.A. in dance program. At the age of eight McQueen saw a production of The Phantom of the Opera and was immediately drawn to the arts. That same year he began studying music and theater. At the age of 11 he started his training in dance at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts. McQueen has also trained as a scholarship recipient in the schools of American Ballet Theatre\, San Francisco Ballet\, and Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet. \nMcQueen was a 2013 recipient of the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago’s Choreographers of Color Award and two-time finalist of the Capezio Award for Choreographic Excellence. His work has appeared at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts\, Carnegie Hall\, SummerStage in Central Park\, Jacob’s Pillow Dance’s Inside/Out series\, Dancers Responding to AIDS’ Fire Island Dance Festival\, and more. As a performer\, McQueen appeared in the Broadway national tours of Wicked and The Color Purple in addition to the Radio City Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall and Metropolitan Opera’s productions of Die Fledermaus\, Aida\, Les Contes d’Hoffmann\, and Don Giovanni. \nMcQueen cites two influential instructors as a source for his work and creative energy\, Donald Robinson and Kazuko Hirabayashi. From Mr. Robinson\, McQueen learned his guiding principle of discipline\, doing what you know you’re supposed to do even when no one is there to make sure you do it. At a time when McQueen was in a struggle trying to make his way as a dancer\, Ms. Hirabayashi told him to choreograph about it. It is in the craft of story-telling and making a way for yourself through discipline and focus that McQueen was led to start The Black Iris Project\, a creation of space for other like-minded artists to reflect their experiences.
